Fear of The Lord is the Path of the Wise

First of all, the “fear of The Lord” does not mean you are scared of Him, like the monster under your bed, spiders, or the zombie apocalypse. In this case, “fear” is referring to a deep respect for His power and awesomeness, an understanding that He has everything under control, and the knowledge that one day we will meet face to face with Jesus on judgement day.  “Reverential awe” is another way to say it.

Proverbs 1:7 says: The fear of The Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Having this respect for God is our starting point in learning from His word and accepting His instruction. We have to realize that He is the ultimate teacher…He made everything, knows everything, and wants to teach us what we need to know. If we do not first “fear” God, we will doubt some of the things that He has to teach us, and will follow what feels best to ourselves.

A fool will reject teaching and thinks he knows it all, refusing to seek help. This foolishness will ultimately lead to your demise, as there is always someone wiser than you. God wants us to be wiser and better than we currently are, however those of us who are foolish will turn away from Him.

I have really struggled in this area in the past, as I feel like I can do a lot on my own and get too caught up to ask for help. Sometimes I find when I ask for help, God tells me that I’m not even supposed to be doing the things I’m working so hard at. I’ve gone and wasted all that time and effort over something I’m not called to…sounds awefully foolish to me.

Proverbs 14:27 says The fear of The Lord is a fountain of life, turning people from the snares of death.

God’s teachings are to protect us from harm, even if we don’t see it at the time. God sees the big picture, we only have a limited view.  God’s teachings are meant to help us in the long run, not for short-term success. God wants us to have LIFE! He doesn’t want us just here going through the motions.

Lets put down our egos, put away what we think is right, and open our hearts to The Truth. God loves us dearly and wants what is best for us. Why don’t we just read His Word and take what He has to offer us? It’s better than what we even can imagine for ourselves.
